From antiquity Italy was occupied by peoples of different origins who with the passing centuries broke it up into numerous distinct regions.

The height of this division came during the Commune era, between the XIIIth and XVth century, when each large town had its own government. After centuries of rifts and perpetual wars against French, Spanish and Austrian invaders, Italy finally became unified in the XIXth century.

After a relentless struggle led by Garibaldi the new unified monarchical state was proclaimed in Turin in 1861. However the territory has kept its mosaic aspect, and each region forms a little country with its own identity, which gives to the whole
