amous region in the South of France, the Provence has a long and turbulent history: occupied by the Greeks in the 5th century BC, then conquered by the Romans in the 2nd century AD it has enjoyed the cultural influence of these two outstanding civilisations from the outset. During the following centuries it suffered the rule of the Barbarians, Arabs, and important European noble families, then in 1246 came under the yoke of the Angevins (from Anjou) who bequeathed it definitively to France in 1481. The region is thus a genuine European crossroads and has benefited from diverse foreign influences, all of which make it a fascinating place today full of treasures to discover. Moreover, throughout these times the region continued to have a close relationship with Italy : the Popes glorified it and moved to Avignon in 1309. Numerous Italian craftsmen went to work there bringing their exceptional know-how to the French traditions, endowing monuments and palaces with their
sumptuous appearance and characteristic charm. The interior decorations are also imbued with this original bond: truly wonderful panelling, tapestries and furniture really do have a soul because they bear the precious mark of a unique past.
